Three Common Mistakes in Affiliate Marketing

Posted on October 15th, 2009 in Affiliate Marketing | 1 Comment »

Affiliate marketing is one of the most effective and potent ways to earn money online. It is a concept that provides everyone with a chance to earn cash via the Internet. Affiliate marketing schemes are easy to join and implement, and they pay regular commission. Hence more and more people are looking at this business.

However, as with any other venture, there are a lot of scams in affiliate marketing. Some of the more common mistakes can cost participants a large chunk of their daily profits. So avoid them if you can.

Mistake 1: Joining the wrong scheme

Lots of people want to start earning from affiliate marketing as soon as possible. So in the rush to get going, they tend jump on a bandwagon and select a product that everyone says is “hot”. In other words they go for a product currently in demand rather than one that appeals to them.

This has a number of disadvantages. In particular, if the product is of little interest to you, then it will be more difficult to generate passion in your marketing. Also, if there is a bandwagon to jump on, then there could be a lot of competition from other affiliates.

So pick a product that appeals to you. Research the product and see if it is in demand. If you are passionate about the product itself, then it will be much easier to promote than if you are in it solely for the money.

Also, think about the product owners (on whose behalf you will be selling). Are there many other affiliates (who will be your competitors)? Is the scheme good to work with?

Mistake 2: Joining too many schemes

Because affiliate marketing schemes are easy to join, there is the temptation to join lots of them to try and maximise your earnings. You may also think that there is nothing wrong with joining many schemes and nothing to lose by it.

This may be true as far as it goes. However, if you join many schemes over a short period, trying to promote them all at the same time will stop you from concentrating on any particular one of them.

What happens then? You will not realise the full potential of your collected schemes and your earnings will be less than you first thought.

To get good results, start off with just one scheme, but one that pays a high commission (say 40%+). Then give it your best shot by promoting your products wholeheartedly. As soon as you are getting reasonable results (with reasonable earnings), then perhaps you could join a further scheme.

The right approach is slow but sure. You really don’t need to rush things, particularly with affiliate marketing. The future of affiliate marketing looks bright and is likely to be around for quite a while.

Mistake 3: Not using the product

The main function of an affiliate is to promote a product or service effectively and persuasively and to seek out customers. To do this you must be able to communicate the product or service’s qualities. This will be harder if you have not tried out the product or service for yourself. In particular it will be more difficult to promote and recommend your offerings convincingly or to create a desire for them in your customers.

Try the product or service first before becoming an affiliate. See if it really delivers what is promised. If you have done so, and still want to promote it, then you can give a real, credible testimonial, fully aware of its pros and cons. This, in turn, will communicate a level of sincerity to your customers and they will be more inclined to try out your wares for themselves.

And finally….

Lots of affiliates make these mistakes and pay dearly for them.

Time is important. Take the time to analyze and develop your marketing strategy. Check continually that what you are doing is likely to yield the results that you want. Done properly, you can maximise both the potential of your affiliate marketing scheme and your earnings from it.

Enhance your Affiliate Marketing Commission

Affiliate marketing is one of the easiest ways to launch an online business and get an income. You do not need to deal with customer orders, refunds, product maintenance, etc., from your own website.

So let’s assume that you are in an affiliate scheme. What should you do next? How about doubling, or even tripling, your commission?

Here are some valuable ideas that could enable you do just that.

1.  Know the best schemes and the best products to advocate

Clearly you want a scheme that will earn you the greatest income in the shortest time.

A good affiliate marketing scheme should meet the following:

• It should have a generous commission structure
• Its products should suit your target audience
• It should have a solid track record of paying affiliates easily and on time.

If you do not seem to be able to establish and then increase your income with one scheme, then drop it and look for better ones.

There are thousands of online affiliate marketing schemes. So you can be choosy. By selecting the best ones you can avoid wasting your advertising costs.

2.  Give away free e-books

Produce free reports or short e-books and then make them available on your website. There is a good chance that you are competing with other affiliates who are promoting the same products under the same scheme. Reports about the product that you promote may distinguish you from this competition. Your reports should include free useful information plus, if possible, some recommendations of the product.

E-books can increase your credibility. This could help persuade customers to try out your offerings.

3.   Collect email addresses from e-book downloads

When someone wants to download your e-book, collect their e-mail address and save it. It is well known that people do not always purchase on the first contact. You may have to send them your sales message more than six times to secure a sale.

Hence you need to make follow-up contacts to remind your prospects that you are still there, ready to provide them with your great products.

Get prospect’s contact data before passing them on to the vendor’s website. You are giving a free advertisement for the product owners but you only get paid when you make a sale. If you send a prospect directly to the product owner, they could be lost to you forever.

Also, once you get a prospect’s contact details, you can send them other marketing messages. This could result in multiple sales, not just the one.

Publish an online newsletter or e-zine. Once you have a relationship with a customer, it will be easier to recommend a product to them than it would be to a stranger. This is one of the reasons for your own newsletter – it could help develop a relationship with your subscriber based on trust.

There is a delicate balance between providing useful information and a sales pitch. If your editorials inform and help your readers, they may support you in turn by purchasing your products.

When you request names, email addresses and other contact details, your website should make it quite clear what data you are collecting, why you want it, what you may use it for and whom you might give it to. You should also give people the option to opt out of receiving your messages at any time (and make this clear on your website). In many areas this is a legal requirement. But in any case it is an essential element in establishing trust.

4.   Request a higher commission

Once you are an established success with a given promotion, contact the merchant to try and negotiate a better commission.

If the merchant is wise, they are likely to prefer agreeing your request to losing a valuable asset – you. Remember that you are a risk-free investment for the merchant. So don’t be shy about asking for a bigger commission; just try and be reasonable.

5.   Pay Per Click

Pay Per Click advertising via a search engine is the most effective means of advertising online. You can even make a small income from managing PPC campaigns via services such as Google AdWords or Yahoo! Search Engine Marketing. Create strong and persuasive PPC ads. Then monitor them to see which ones are more effective and which ones should be ditched.

And finally…

Give each of these ideas a try and see what difference they can make to your income.

Surviving Affiliate Marketing

Posted on October 13th, 2009 in Affiliate Marketing | 8 Comments »

Affiliate marketing people are always looking for the successful market with the biggest return. Some may think that there is a ‘magic spell’ that they can harness. But it is really just good marketing practices, proven over the years, coupled with hard work and dedication.

Tactics that have already worked with online marketing continue to work in affiliate marketing. With the following tips you should increase your sales and survive in the online affiliate marketing world.

Unique Web Pages Per Product

For each distinct product that you market, use a separate web page (or set of pages). Do not cram everything together just to save money on web development or hosting. Ideally you will have a website focussing on each unique product and nothing else.

Always incorporate product reviews in your site. That way your visitors can get a better idea of whether this is what they want.

Testimonials from customers who have used the product are also a great idea. If you include the names (and perhaps photos) of the people giving the testimonial, you must make sure that they have given their consent.

You may also write articles about the product and its various uses and then include them on a further page. The pages should be eye-catching and persuasive, with calls for action. Headlines should encourage the visitor to read more, possibly even to contact you. Draw attention to your key points. This will assist the reader who wants to learn what the page is about and to find out more.

Free Reports

Offer your readers free reports. If at all practical, position them at the top side of the page where they cannot be missed.

Try creating autoresponder messages that will be sent to those who sign up to your mailing list. Research suggests that a sale is usually closed at the seventh contact with a prospect.

With a web page alone, just two things may happen: a closed sale or the prospect’s departure from the page, possibly never to return. By regularly mailing your prospects, you will remind them of the product that they considered previously. Make sure that the message gives specific reasons to buy the product. It should not sound like a general sales pitch.

Concentrate on key points like how the product can make life, work, etc., easier or more enjoyable. Make the message subject line persuasive. However, avoid the word “free” – some spam filters will drop those messages into the junk pile before they have been read. Convince those receiving your free reports that they will be missing out if they do not take advantage of your products and services.

Attract the Right Traffic

Your web site needs to attract visitors with a potential interest in your product. Consider, if a visitor has absolutely no interest in your offerings, they will join those who have moved on, never to return.

Write articles that will be published in e-zines and e-reports. That way you can find publications that cover your target customers. Hence your articles might just capture their interest.

Try writing at least two articles a week, each of 300 to 600 words. If you keep on writing and maintaining these articles, as many as 100 targeted readers may be attracted to your site in a day.

Generally only 1 in a 100 site visitors are likely to buy your products or services. Hence, if you can generate as much as 1,000 targeted hits per day on your website, you can expect to make 10 sales, according to the statistical average.

And Finally

If you think about the above approaches, they do not sound particularly difficult. It just needs a little time and planning from you.

Try out these ideas with several affiliate marketing schemes. It could be your means of survival in affiliate marketing, a place where not everyone does survive.

Key Questions For Affiliate Marketing Success

Posted on October 9th, 2009 in Affiliate Marketing | 10 Comments »

Affiliate marketing has become better known over the years. Most schemes provide a business with the chance to use sales people who are paid only for successful outcomes. Starters in affiliate marketing have the chance to start an online business with limited capital.

The rewards for affiliates can be high, even more so for the trained affiliate marketing practitioner. Hence the increasing number of affiliate schemes that are offered to prospective affiliates. You now have to consider how you will choose the right schemes and get the income you need.

The questions below will help you to assess businesses and their affiliate schemes. They will also help you find success without wasting too much time, effort and money.

What income would you get?

You need to know how much you should expect from each sale. There is little point spending time and money to endorse a product when you will not be well-compensated in return. You could end up wasting more time on promotions than you spend generating sales. Thus it may be better to just endorse products with high payments. Alternatively you may be able to set up a situation where you will trade products in large numbers to get high income.

How much traffic goes to the ecommerce site?

Try and assess the volume of traffic that a business site is receiving. If the site is in the top 100,000, the business gets good traffic and probably has many affiliates already. If it is below the top 500,000, either it is not very good or there may be a chance to earn some money.

Do continual product research if the site has a low traffic rating. If you can afford it, it would be a good idea to buy the product yourself. If not, conduct research to see if there have been any bad remarks about it online.

If everything seems fine and the product is great, you could have found yourself a winner.

How often are you paid?

Different businesses make payments at different intervals, e.g. weekly, monthly or even quarterly. You need to know when to expect your commissions.

You should also find out the minimum sales that you need to make before you get anything. Some businesses will not pay you until you are entitled to a certain amount. Others will pay you as soon as the sale is completed.

Are you paid for subsequent sales?

Some businesses will only pay you if the customer views their sites via a direct link from your site. You will get nothing if the customer starts of buying via your site but makes later purchases by directly accessing the business’s site. If you are to stay profitable, you need to ensure that you will get paid regardless of how the customer revisits the site.

What marketing resources do affiliates get?

Find out the type and quality of marketing materials that a business offers its affiliates. Will they provide articles or other content that you can include on your website? How about free guides, special offers and samples (which are great for promotion)?

If the marketing resources are good, then this may show that the business will provide good support for its affiliates.

However you may sometimes get a better response from your own marketing initiatives. If the affiliate scheme has been around a long time, then the promotions and marketing material may have become outdated or over-exposed. Hence a new promotion could give the impression of a fresh product.

In conclusion

Affiliate marketing can be profitable and a good place to start if you are new to online marketing. Finding the right affiliate scheme can be a complicated matter. So do your research thoroughly. The above questions will help you find the scheme that meets your needs.
